My Dad's 1969 Buick Wildcat



My Dad's Wildcat was rough. It only had 69,000 miles on it when we bought it and they were all old lady miles, but that was one rough old lady. She was 90 when her son took the car from her. She had dinged every corner of the car. She hit her garage a few times and finally backed over her neighbor's fence, which required her to back up their driveway first. She said she didn't do it, but the damage on the rear bumper said otherwise. Also, the car had massive water damage. A friend of mine had a photo of a relative's house during a massive flood. In the photo you could see down the street the top half of a 1969 Buick. It was gold with a black top just like Dad's car. I did't know if it was the same car, but it very well could have been. We squeezed water out of everything in that car when we first got it, including the headrests. The rings did not seal properly and the valve seals weren't sealing entirely either. If you floored it good you'd have to add a quart of oil when you got home. But it had bucket seats and a console shifter and no one else had anything like it. With 60 series tires on it the car sat so low the frame would bang the lip of a bridge I had to cross on my way to school. The car is gone now. I couldn't afford to restore it and my dad didn't want to. He did a lot of bodywork to it when he first bought it, but his love affair with the car faded out eventually. I think I had something to do with that. I was always driving it so he never got to. Eventually he gave it to me. I drove it for years, but I had to sell it when I got laid off while still in college. I heard from a friend that he saw it in a junkyard about a year after I sold it. What a waste. I guess the person I sold it to couldn't afford to fix all that water damage either. The body had rust, the engine needed a total overhaul, the suspension needed a rebuild and the interior needed redoing. There was nothing that didn't need to be redone. But it sure was a fast and fun car. I guess thats why I bought another '69, only this one is in much better shape.
